Stephen Cottrell

Life

After his studies at the Polytechnic of Central London and the seminar St Stephen 's House in Oxford, he was ordained in 1985. His ecclesiastical career began as a curate in London's Forest Hill and at a church in Chichester. Immediately prior to his appointment as bishop, he was a canon of the Cathedral of Peterborough.

On January 6, 2004 he was appointed Bishop of Reading, a suffragan bishop in the diocese of Oxford was known after his predecessor, Jeffrey John, an avowed LGBT activist, withdrew his nomination. On 4 May 2004, he received episcopal consecration, which was confirmed by a Letters Patent. After his appointment as Bishop of Chelmsford in the Province of Canterbury on 22 March 2010 he was transferred on October 6, 2010 in the Diocese of Chelmsford and established on 27 November 2010 in Chelmsford Cathedral in his office. On February 10, 2014, he was in his capacity as Bishop of Chelmsford as a spiritual Lord Member of the House of Lords. On March 25, 2014 he was, with the assistance of Peter Robert Forster, Bishop of Chester, and Timothy John Stevens, Bishop of Leicester, officially introduced into the House of Lords.

Cottrell is a member of Affirming Catholicism movement that defends Catholicism within the Anglican Church and supported a campaign for the ordination of women. He is married and has three children.
