Steve Penney (ice hockey)

Steve Penney ( born February 2, 1961 in Ste. Foy, Quebec ) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender who played in the National Hockey League, among others, for the Montreal Canadiens and Winnipeg Jets in its active from 1978 to 1988.

Career

Steve Penney began his career as a hockey player with the Shawinigan Cataractes, for which he was active in the Canadian Junior Football League QMJHL 1978-1981. During this period, he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft in 1980 in the eighth round as the 166th overall player of the Montreal Canadiens. For the team from Quebec he gave in the 1983/84 season his debut in the National Hockey League, after being in the two seasons before exclusively for their farm team, the Flint Generals of the International Hockey League and the Nova Scotia Voyageurs of the American Hockey league was used. With the Montreal Canadians won in the 1985/86 season for the first and only time as a back -up goalkeeper the prestigious Stanley Cup. In 18 sessions, he sat a total of 30 times on the bench and had actually qualified due to an injury that his name would be engraved on the Stanley Cup, followed by Montréal however omitted. Nevertheless, he received a Stanley Cup ring and can be seen on the official Stanley Cup photo.

August 19, 1986, Penney was issued together with the rights to Jan Ingman in exchange for Brian Hayward to the Winnipeg Jets. The Canadians, however, he could not prevail, and came in two seasons only 15 times in the NHL. In addition, he was in 32 games for their AHL farm team Sherbrooke Canadiens and Moncton Hawks between the posts.
