1980 NHL Entry Draft

The NHL Entry Draft in 1980, the annual talent contraction of the National Hockey League, took place on 11 June 1980 at the Montreal Forum in Montreal, Canada, in the province of Quebec instead.

The Draft took place as in the previous 17 Draft draws this year in Montreal, but also the first time for public accessible. Previously, the Draft had always been held in a hotel or in the office of the NHL. This time we went to the stadium of the Montreal Canadiens, where 2500 spectators attended this event.

A total of 210 players were taken in ten rounds. The draft was not occupied so prominent as in the previous year had not as hoped drawn with Doug Wickenheiser the big prize at the NHL Entry Draft in 1979 and the Montreal Canadiens. After all, also a native of Montreal Denis Savard and Paul Coffey were among the top players. Overlook had the Scouts of the team on the front seats later stars like Bernie Nicholls and Steve Larmer. With Jay North for the first time a player was pulled from a U.S. high school.
