Dave Babych

Dave Michael Babych (* May 23, 1961 in Edmonton, Alberta ) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey player who is active during his active career, among other things, for the Winnipeg Jets, Hartford Whalers, Vancouver Canucks, Philadelphia Flyers and Los Angeles Kings in the National Hockey League had. His brother Wayne is also a former professional hockey player.

Career

Dave Babych began his career at the Fort Saskatchewan Traders in the Alberta Junior Hockey League, where he was active in the season 1977/78. Subsequently, he joined the Portland Winter Hawks and went in the next three years for their team in the Canadian top junior league WHL on the ice. Babych, who had been positively noticed and honored as the best defender of the season 1979/80 with the Bill Hunter Memorial Trophy for its activities, was selected at the NHL Entry Draft in 1980 in the first round to second position overall by the Winnipeg Jets. For the 1980/81 season the defensive player was taken immediately into the NHL squad of jets. During his debut season Babych completed 69 games for the Winnipeg Jets in the NHL and scored 44 points scorer. Having previously qualified for the play-offs was still misses clearly testified to the team in the season 1981/82 to third place in the Campbell Conference, and thus secured a place in the finals. In four games, but the team lost in the first round against the St. Louis Blues and Babych spent 29 penalty minutes on the bench.

In the following three years the defender with the Jets managed each of making the play -offs, but the team was defeated three times in a row against the Edmonton Oilers. During this time he was twice at the NHL All-Star Game for the team of the Campbell Conference All-Stars in action and posted at the host in 1983 and 1984 each hit. On November 25, 1985, he was released in a swap deal for the Hartford Whalers, in return, Ray Neufeld went to Winnipeg. In Hartford the defensive player always counted for permanent staff and qualified with the Whalers in six years, a total of five times for the final round. He fell for almost the entire season in 1990/91 for the operation of gambling, since had to undergo after a wrist injury and surgery as a result graduated only eight games for the Whalers. Babych Draft were selected by the Minnesota North Stars on May 30, 1991 at the expansion. On 22 June 1991 he was transferred to a barter to the Vancouver Canucks and sent as compensation Tom Kurvers to the North Stars. In the 1993/94 season with the Canucks, he managed to move into the finals for the Stanley Cup and lost the series against the New York Rangers in just seven games.

In the following seasons, he was with the team on this success not able to go and missed three times in a row to qualify for the finals. On 24 March 1998, the Canucks gave him off for a draft pick to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange. There Babych was the first time in his playing career not as a regular player in action and achieved comparatively little points scorer. After he had spent a year in Philadelphia, followed the next barter. He was released along with a fifth- round election to the Los Angeles Kings and sent in return, Steve Duchesne to the Flyers. After he finished eight games for the Kings and two points scored, his contract was not renewed at end of season. Babych remained until January 2000 and then signed a free agent at the HC Ambri -Piotta. The defender ran in three games for the club in the National League A on the ice and ended after the conclusion of the season his active career.

Internationally

Babych took part in the World Championships in 1981 and 1989 with Team Canada. His greatest success was about winning the silver medal at the World Championships in 1989.
