Steven Geray

Steven Geray ( born November 10, 1904 in Ungvár, Austria - Hungary, now Uzhhorod, Ukraine, † December 26, 1973 in Los Angeles, actually Istvàn Gyergyay ) was an American film actor of Hungarian origin.

Life

Steven Geray was born Istvàn Gyergyay in Ungvár in the former Empire of Austria - Hungary. He began his acting career at the Hungarian National Theatre in Budapest and joined in 1929 under his real name for the first time in a movie on. From 1935, he was seen by his stage name Steven Geray in a number of British films, until he went to Hollywood in 1940 and 1941 received a contract with 20th Century Fox. Then he played mostly small supporting roles, such as in Jean Negulescos film noir The Mask of Dimitrios ( The Mask of Dimitrios, 1944) or in Alfred Hitchcock's Spellbound ( Spellbound, 1945). Perhaps his most famous role is that of philosophizing casino employees Uncle Pio in Charles Vidor's classic film noir Gilda next to Rita Hayworth and Glenn Ford in 1952 attempted Columbia Pictures the immense success of Gilda repeat, why Hayworth, Ford and Geray for Affair in Trinidad ( Affair in Trinidad ) again stood together in front of the camera.

Throughout his career Geray appeared in over 100 movies. From the 1950s he was involved in numerous television series including Lassie (1955 ), Dr. Kildare (1962), Bonanza (1962), Perry Mason ( 1958/1962 ) and I Dream of Jeannie (1965). In 1966 he retired from the film business. He died in 1973 at the age of 69 in Los Angeles.
