Stor Iceland (Norwegian Storön: " Big Island" ) is an uninhabited island in Nunavut, Canada. It belongs to the Queen Elizabeth Islands.

Geography

Stor Iceland is located in the Eureka Sound between Ellesmere Island in the east and the Axel Heiberg Island in the west. It is separated from the Axel Heiberg Island by 6 km wide Fulmar Channel. The Eureka Sound between Stor Iceland and Ellesmere Island about 7.5 km wide. East of the island begins the Bay Fiord, which extends deep into the Ellesmere Island and a number of smaller island - Does Iceland and the Gretha Islands - has. Stor Iceland is 32 km long, up to 14 km wide and has an area of 313 km ².

The island achieved in the southwestern portion has a height of about 560 m above sea level. The middle part forms a plateau of an average height of 100 m, which drops steeply to the southeast to the sea, while the other coasts are mostly flat. The northeastern end of the island is dominated by 200 to 300 m high mountains.

History

The island was discovered on April 30, 1901 during the Second Norwegian Fram expedition of Otto Sverdrup and formally took possession of Norway, which never perceived its sovereign rights. Since 1930 it belongs to Canada.
