Tricks of the subconscious mind is a Canadian animated short comedy film directed by Chris Landreth from the year 2013.

Action

At a ceremony Charles Langford is approached by a man who knows his name. Charles knows that he has met the man once before a few years ago in Paris, but do not know his name. While the man goes to a bar to get drinks, Charles desperately trying to remember the man's name.

In the subconscious of Charles the game show Password Subconscious begins. Host of the show is Charles ' super-ego, guest and tipster for Charles are initially Dick Van Dyke and Yoko Ono. Is displayed in the viewer the solution, " John ", Charles ' win in the show would be bypassing an embarrassing situation in real life. Dick van Dykes Type " Travolta " leads Charles to no brainstorm. William S. Burroughs is " Kennedy " as a hint, but falls only Charles "Bobby" a. James Joyce and H. P. Lovecraft can not help, while his Nanny and Ayn Rand let him be again to toddler and big baby Charles. Sammy Davis Jr. will not progress with Lennon and also the Virgin fails in its notice to the apostles.

In reality, the man returns with drinks at Charles. The drowning literally in his subconscious, he can not find the solution yet. Only the rapid succession of people who have been in the past few minutes called him with the last name, makes it clear that the name "John" has to be. The relief is so great that he constantly speaks to the now following conversation with John first name.

Production

Chris Landreth created Tricks of the subconscious at the National Film Board of Canada. On the realization of the film students of animation workshops at the Seneca College Animation Arts Centre were involved. The film was computer animated in 3D. As software used Autodesk Maya, a 3D modeling software, as well as Sandde of IMAX Corporation. Scenes by John Dilworth and Chris Landreth created on the celebration as pixilation (Single mode ), a form of stop-motion, where the backgrounds were generated on the computer. It was Landreths first 3D movie, and the third, which he realized at the NFB.

The show in the film is an allusion to the Show Password, which ran on television in the 1960s. Landreth 2010 saw a repeat of the program, which took him to the film idea.

The film experienced in June 2013 at the Festival d' Animation Annecy and its premiere was shown in January 2014 on the Sundance Film Festival and the Festival du Court - Métrage de Clermont -Ferrand. On January 31, 2014 he ran on ARTE first time on German television.

Awards

Tricks of the subconscious won in 2013 at the Festival d' Animation Annecy Cristal d' Annecy. On the Semana Internacional de Cine de Valladolid, he received the Silver ear for Best Short Film. In 2014 he was nominated for a Canadian Screen Award for Best Animated Short Film.
