The Sultan Aji Muhammad Sulaiman Airport ( SAMS ) ( Indonesian Bandar Udara Sultan Aji Muhammad Sulaiman ( SAMS ), IATA: BPN, ICAO: WALL ) is the airport of Balikpapan, the capital of the province of Kalimantan Timur. The new airport opened in 1997 and replaced the already formed in colonial times, old plant on the same site. Judging by the number of passengers it is the sixth largest airport in Indonesia.

Currently, the expansion of the airport building and operating larger aircraft such as the Airbus A340 runs to allow the government plans to extend the start and runway 3250 meters.

History

The SAMS airport was used during the colonial period, especially for the Dutch oil production activities in the region. The Indonesian Ministry of Transportation opened the airport in 1960 for civilian or commercial aircraft traffic. In 1987, the airport management was according to the Government Decree on the State airport operator PT. Angkasa Pura I passed. The airport was 1991-1997 renovated two times. The first phase ran from 1991 to 1994 with the expansion of the airstrip and the renovation of the runway, passenger and cargo terminal. The second phase ran from 1996 to 1997 with the renovation of the maintenance hangar, the oil depot and the administration building.

  • On July 4, 1988, a Vickers Viscount was the airline Bouraq Indonesia Airlines severely damaged with the flight number PK- IVW, as the starboard and nose landing gear during landing with a tailwind broke.
