Sultana (grape)

Sultana is a vine with white, seedless berries. It is the most important table grape and the vine with the world's largest acreage. The grape variety is mainly used as a table grape and for the production of raisins. Next, a neutral white wine and grape concentrate is made from it. Your wine is often used as a base wine in the distillation. This species probably originates from the eastern Mediterranean or Southern Iran.

It is grown on nearly 440,000 ha worldwide. Of this, about a quarter to Turkey. Next significant acreage are 110,000 acres in the United States and there, especially in California, Iran ( 50,000 ha), Greece ( 25,000 ha ), Chile ( 21,395 ha, 2006), Australia ( 5,761 hectares in 2007), Syria ( 12,000 ha), South Africa ( 11,800 ha ), China ( 10,000 ) and Iraq (10,000 ).

In California it is to find the variety with the largest acreage and almost exclusively in the raisins at Central Valley. William Thompson introduced the grape in California, so they often also means Thompson Seedless.

Sultana is doing very well in warm, dry areas. It forms bright green, small, oval, often seedless berries. During its heyday it responds well to the plant hormone gibberellin and then forms fewer but larger berries.

Sultana served as a crossing partner in the red and white variety Carina, when based on American vines hybrids Himrod and bred in Australia variety Tulillah.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In the ampelography the habit is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is only spinnwebig hairy and light green in color. The young leaves are smooth and shiny.
  • The medium to large, bright green leaves are five-lobed and medium deep sinuate. The petiole is lyrenförmig closed. The sheet is perforated only dull. The teeth are medium in size compared to the varieties. The leaf surface (also called leaf blade ) is smooth and shiny.
  • Most cone - shaped to cylindrical grape is repeatedly shouldered, tall and loose-. The roundish berries are small and of gold - yellow color. The shell of the berry is strong and firm.

The Sultana has a vigorous growth. It sprouts late and therefore usually escapes the spring frosts. The variety is very susceptible to the vine diseases powdery mildew ( Oidium also called ), downy mildew, anthracnose and Eutypiose. The thickness of the soft shell protects against gray mold; the berries can ripen on the vine and therefore long are good for transport. In particular, the transport capability is a more important factor in the field of table grapes.

The grapes ripen early to mid-October, physiologically about 20 days later than that of the Good Dels.
