Himrod

Himrod is a in 1928 newly bred white grape variety with seedless berries. It is a cross between the varieties of Ontario and Sultana. This is a complex culture in which genes of Vitis labrusca and wild vines Vitis vinifera are available. It is therefore one hybrid vines. As a breeder is A. B. Stout stated. The selection of 56 seedlings was carried out in 1935. Within this selection not only the grape variety Himrod was selected, but he also wrote varieties Interlaken, Romulus and Lakemont. Himrod was released for commercial cultivation in 1952. All four varieties were named after towns or villages in New York State.

The new variety was developed at Cornell University in Geneva ( the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station, Department of Pomology and Viticulture, so the vines breeding Institute in upstate New York). The university is located at the southern end of Cayuga Lake.

The grape is mostly used as Hausrebe or as locally marketed table grape, with its benefits the relatively low proportion of acid. Smaller stocks are known in New York ( → Viticulture in New York ), Ohio (→ Viticulture in Ohio), Arkansas (→ viticulture in Arkansas), Japan, India and Canada.

Synonym: the breeding stock number 15310 or NY NEW YORK 15310, Himrod Seedless and Hymrod.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In the ampelography the habit is described as follows:

  • The medium-sized leaves are three-to five-lobed and deeply sinuate ( see also the article sheet form). The petiole is closed V-shaped. The blade is serrated double row. The teeth are set moderately dilated in comparison of the varieties.
  • The cone - shaped to cylindrical bunch is medium ( the weight of about 15 cm long grape is on average 200 gr) and loose-. The oblong-shaped berries are medium in size and of a greenish-yellow color that changes when fully ripe almost to the amber. The berries have a slightly aromatic flavor. Due to the medium- thick grape skins the variety suitable for the transportation as well as several weeks of storage is suitable.

The early sprouting grape ripens just before the Chasselas and is thus within the white grapes very early maturing, so that they can mature in cool locations. The variety is susceptible to anthracnose (especially in India). A better resistance has the variety to powdery mildew and downy mildew. In addition, the variety is highly vigorous and productive. The variety has good winter hardiness. Strong damage occur only at temperatures below -10 ° C.
