Sund, Ã…land

Sund [ sʉnd ] is a municipality in the autonomous Finnish province (Finnish: Lääni ) Åland. It lies in the east of the Åland main island Fasta Åland, adjacent to the communities in the west and Finström Saltvik in the north. Sund has 1038 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) and an area of ​​111.82 square kilometers. As in Åland is Swedish is the official language.

Geography

Sound is one of the 27 official Finnish national landscapes, where special symbolic value for the Finnish history, culture or nature is attached. In the case Sund this is due to the historical significance of the community area.

Attractions

Sund is the site of the medieval castle Kastelholm, which played an important role in the Scandinavian power struggles, especially in the 15th and 16th centuries. The castle is still one of the major landmarks of Åland today. Another military fortification erected in Russia in the 19th century in the form of the fortress Bomarsund. The ruins of the destroyed during the Crimean War fort can still be seen today.

Economy
