Sunifred, Count of Barcelona

Sunifred I of Barcelona ( * 810, † 848 ) was 844-848 Count of Barcelona.

Origin and descendants

Sunifreds father was likely to Count Borrell of Osona, insofar as both Sunicfredo 829 mentioned and whose father Bosrello were identical to those in a document of Emperor Louis the Pious, from the year. The probability of this situation is represented, at least in younger historiographical considerations.

Married Sunifred was with a lady named Ermesende which was apparently a daughter of Count Bello of Carcassonne. The was even considered in the older literature as father Sunifreds because his son Miró is referred to in a document from the year 879 as the grandson of Bello. More likely Bello was the mother of Miró, so Ermesende, whose grandfather. The children Sunifreds and Ermesendes were:

  • Wilfred the Hairy (? -897 ), Count of Barcelona
  • Miro the Elder (? -896 ), Count of Roussillon and Conflent
  • Radulf I., (? -896 ), Count of Besalu
  • Sunifred (? -890 ), Abbot of Arles
  • Riculf (? -916 ), Bishop of Elne
  • Sesenanda
  • Ermesinde (? -898 )

Title

  • 834-848 Count of Urgell and Cerdanya
  • 844-848 Count of Barcelona, Roussillon, Girona, Osona, Besalu, Narbonne, Agde, Béziers, Lodève, Melguelh and Nîmes
  • Count of Conflent during a short period before 848

Life

834 received Sunifred the Frankish king Louis the Pious the counties of Urgell and Cerdanya, in the years 835 ( Cerdanya ) and 838 ( Urgell ) by Galí I. Asnar, an ally of Musa ibn Musa, had been occupied.

842 penetrated a Moorish army of the emir of Cordoba, Abd ar - Rahman II, under the leadership of Abd al - Wahid ibn Musa and Musa in the County of Barcelona one. The Moors turned to the country's interior to move on after Septimania. But you might be repulsed by Sunifred even before they reached the Cerdanya.

This success is considered to reason that the new Frankish king Charles the Bald, after the death of Bernard of Septimania Sunifred to the Count and Marquis of Barcelona, Girona, Osona, Besalu, Narbonne, Agde, Béziers, Lodève, Melguelh and Nîmes appointed - in addition to his counties of Cerdanya and Urgell.

In December 847, the Emir asked for a peace treaty.

After the death of Berà II ( 846-848 ) was also the county Conflent of the Cerdanya and thus on Sunifred.

It is likely that both Sunifred and his brother Sunyer by William of Septimania, son of Bernard of Septimania, were murdered. Wilhelm had allied with Pepin II of Aquitaine, located 848 raised against Charles the Bald and occupied the counties Empúries and Barcelona.

One of his sons, Wilfried, was 878 as Wilfred the Hairy, Count of Barcelona. He is considered the founder of Catalonia.
