Supreme Patriarch of Thailand

The Supreme Patriarch monk or Sangharaja ( Thai: พระ สังฆราช ) is the head of the Sangha, ie of the order of Buddhist monks in Thailand. This office will be officially awarded by the King of Thailand, although the election takes place by senior monks. The Office of the Supreme Patriarch was established in 1782 with the founding of the Chakri dynasty of Phra Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke ( Rama I ).
