Their debut album contained Psychedelic Rock, which was based on folk and jazz. One can think of it as Jefferson Airplane, which was influenced by cellos, flutes and Ornette Coleman. Then they played at countless festivals as an opener for many figures of the time such as Eric Burdon & The Animals, Jimi Hendrix, Linda Ronstadt, Paul Butterfield, Cream, Grateful Dead, Frank Zappa and The Mothers, The Who, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Jefferson Airplane, Joe Cocker, Santana, Buffalo Springfield, The Doors, Jerry Lee Lewis, Big Brother and The Holding Company, Bing Crosby, James Brown and Chuck Berry.

Sweetwater was known definitively by their appearance at the Woodstock festival on August 15, 1969. Sweetwater was after three solo artists, the first band at Woodstock. Originally they were supposed to act as an opener, like many others, however, remained well, stuck in traffic and had to be flown in by helicopter. Because although the instruments were already built, but it had not been a sound check, the band with their 45 -minute performance was very unhappy.

After Woodstock, the history of the band was interrupted: The singer Nancy Nevins was severely injured in a car accident in December 1969. The band broke up - after two more albums without Nevins - in consequence on.

1994, however, during the course of the Woodstock II concert a reunion of the band. In addition to the founding members met drummer Mike Williams and guitarist Joe Bruley the band.
