Action

Bay Kennish is the daughter of Kathryn and businessman and former professional baseball player John, who live in upscale Mission Hills in Kansas City, Kansas, along with Bay's brother, Toby. One day he finds out Bay in the classroom that she does not have the same blood type as her family. Kathryn and John make some research and learn that Bay is not their biological daughter. Furthermore, they find out that Bay and Daphne, who were both born on the same day, were accidentally swapped at the hospital.

Daphne Vasquez lives with her single mother Regina, a former alcoholic, and her grandmother from Puerto Rico in a working class neighborhood called Riverside in Kansas City, Missouri. By meningitis in childhood Daphne lost her hearing and visited since Carlton, a school for deaf children, in which she plays basketball.

When the two families meet for the first time, experience the Kennishs that Regina has financial problems. Therefore, they offer her, rent free to move to a neighboring house belonging to them. This Bay and Daphne will be given the opportunity to know their biological parents. Regina and Bay will soon realize that they have the same passion for art. In addition, Bay wants to find out absolutely who her biological father, but with little success. In the course of the first season to Bay in love with Daphne's best friend Emmett Bledsoe, in the later Daphne falls in love.

Daphne finds out that her mother Regina since she was three years knows that she is not their biological mother. In addition, Regina has for years collected photos of Bay. The Kennish family has many things wrong with Regina and Daphne and Daphne meddles in education. In the semifinals emerges Bay 's biological father Angelo Sorrento, and Regina's secrets are revealed.

The main theme of the series are cultural conflicts between hearing and deaf people with the sub- theme of class conflict between rich and poor. Numerous clashes are discussed, for example, the question of whether deaf people may ever ride a motorcycle, or dispute between the mothers Kathryn and Regina, Daphne whether to get a cochlear implant or not.

Production

In February 2011, ABC Family announced that the pilot Switched at Birth is ordered as a series. Already in November 2010, Katie Leclerc, Lea Thompson and Constance Marie were required for the series. A few days later were added to the main cast yet Vanessa Marano, DW Moffett and Lucas Grabeel. All roles that represent a deaf person, all are really deaf and fluent in ASL. On 1 August 2011 ABC Family ordered 22 more episodes that have to be added to the first season.

Mid- August 2012 ABC Family ordered a second season consisting of 21 episodes. Almost a year later, the station announced the production of a third season.

The first season was divided into three parts aired on ABC Family between June 6, 2011, and October 22, 2012. Initially ran ten episodes in the summer of 2011, twelve episodes in the spring of 2012 and the last eight episodes in the fall of 2012. The broadcast of the second season began, the transmitter on January 7, 2013. After first ten episodes shown, it came in March 2013, also in this Season to an interruption. The remaining episodes took place from June 10th to August 19th, 2013 on ABC Family.

The third season will be broadcast since 13 January 2014.
