Syrian parliamentary election, 1953

On October 9, 1953 parliamentary elections were held in Syria. The country was at that time under the repressive one-party rule by Adib al- Shishakli.

The result was a victory for the Arab liberation movement, which won 72 of the 82 seats.

The People's Party and the National Block were banned and prevented from continuing to work. Most of their leaders were under the Adib al- Schischaklis regime, which three years earlier with a coup came, imprisoned or placed under house arrest to power.
