Syrian parliamentary election, 2007

The parliamentary elections in Syria in 2007 were held on April 22, 2007.

The ruling Baath party won 134 of 250 seats in the People's Council, an absolute majority, together with allied parties in the National Progressive Front and Independent a two-thirds majority.

The number of seats the parties of the National Progressive Front increased from 167 to 169, while the seat number of independent candidates dropped from 83 to 81. The election was boycotted by the opposition in exile and referred to as manipulated as well as a "farce".

Modalities

The number of candidate entries for the general election reached the closing date at 9,770, of which 2,293 were accepted, including 158 women. The candidates competed for 250 seats, divided among the 14 governorates Syria as follows:

  • National Progressive Front, 169 seats
  • Independent, 81 seats

Results

Approximately 56.12 % of the 11.96 million voters cast their votes, and 30 female candidates were elected to Parliament, as many as in 2003.
