Tain

Tain (Gaelic: Baile Dhubhthaich ) is a town in the Scottish Highland Unitary Authority. It is located about 40 km north- north-east of Inverness and 80 km southwest of Thurso on the south coast of the Dornoch Firth. Tain, the oldest Royal Burgh in Scotland and received this status in the year 1457th In 2001, Tain recorded 3511 inhabitants.

To the west of Tain lies the operated since 1843 Whisky Glenmorangie distillery; active since 1790 Balblair distillery is located about seven kilometers west in Edderton.

Traffic

Tain is located on the major highway A9, which connects Edinburgh with Thurso and a few kilometers west of Tain crossed the Dornoch Firth on the Dornoch Firth Bridge. Furthermore, Tain has since 1864 its own railway station, which the Far North Line operated regularly.
