Tallaght

Tallaght [ tælə ] (Irish Tallaght [ t̪aʊl̪əxt̪ ] ) is a suburb of Dublin, Ireland, the fifth largest city in the Republic and the administrative center of County South Dublin. Tallaght is at the foot of the Wicklow Mountains, about 13 km south-west from Dublin city center and has 71 467 inhabitants ( 2011).

Location and Transport

The urban area extends from Spawell and Tymon Park in the east to Saggart in the West. The north of Tallaght, Clondalkin and Walkinstown borders while starting the foothills of the Wicklow Mountains to the south on the border of the urban area. Since the early 1970s, the city has grown from a small village into a large suburb of Dublin. Despite its infrastructure and considerable population ( it is only of Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Galway exceeded ) Tallaght has not gotten awarded the status of a City.

With downtown Dublin Tallaght is connected since 2004 by the red line Luas tram. In addition, between Tallaght and Dublin city center to many bus lines from Dublin Bus. Right through the urban area, the well-developed N81 from Dublin goes according to Tullow.

History

The stone box on the Lugmore Hill is located in the townland Lugmore ( Irish on Log Mór, " the big cave " ) in Tallaght.

In 1310 the Bailiff of Tallaght got to build the royal permission fortifications to protect the town against the repeated attacks of Celtic clans. Of these buildings today nothing remains and there is no evidence of their exact location. 1324 began with the establishment of Tallaght Castle. By this construction the site was an important defense system on the edge of the Pale. The castle was finally demolished in 1729.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, several mills were built along the Dodder, which caused an economic boom and population growth in the area. In 1888, Tallaght was a station of the steam tram from Dublin to Blessington. This made for a better connection and brought day-trippers from Dublin in the place.

Cityscape

The city center is dominated by The Square, one of the largest shopping centers in Ireland. Here are branches of many retailers ( eg Tesco, Dunnes Stores and Easons ), a toy library, several restaurants and a hotel. Nearby is also the seat of the County Councils and several other authorities. The Square is just off the N81 and is of Luas and many bus lines operated.

The Tallaght Hospital is one of the largest hospitals in the country. Also located in the city's Institute of Technology, founded in 1992 (IT Tallaght ). In the vicinity of the square the Tallaght Stadium was completed in 2009, which serves as home to professional football club Shamrock Rovers.
