Tambaram (Tamil: தாம்பரம் Tāmparam [TA mbəɾʌm ː ] ) is a city in the suburb area of Chennai (Madras ), the capital of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The population is around 175,000 ( 2011 census ).

Tambaram is located approximately 25 kilometers southwest of the city of Chennai and nine kilometers southwest of the airport Chennai inland from the coast of the Gulf of Bengal. The city is the capital of Tambaram taluks in the district of Kanchipuram and is part of the metropolitan region of Chennai.

Tambaram is the most important transport hub in the southern suburban area of Chennai. The leading southwest National Highway 45 ( Grand Southern Trunk Road), one of the main arterial roads of Chennai, runs through Tambaram. In addition, the city on the southwestern line Chennaier suburban train (Chennai Suburban Railway) is connected to the city center. The Tambaram railway station to be built in the medium to long-distance transport to relieve the two main train stations downtown Chennai Central and Chennai Egmore. Then the Tambaram railway station would operate the trains running southbound long-distance trains. Also for bus services is Tambaram a major hub, but suffers from the lack of an adequate bus station.

Founded in 1837, Madras Christian College, one of the oldest colleges in Chennai, located since 1937 in Tambaram. In addition, Tambaram is location of a base for the Indian Air Force.
