Tani Tabbal

Life and work

Tabbal explored the drums from the age of five; already the age of fourteen he started as a professional musician to work and performed with singer Oscar Brown Jr.. In his youth he also played in 1973 and 1974 in the Sun Ra Arkestra, with whom he can also be heard on his later albums Dual Change and Somewhere Else.

He later worked in Roscoe Mitchell Sound Ensemble, of which he was the early 80s. In addition, he trained with Jabiru Shahid the rhythm section of Faruq Z. Bey Griot Galaxy. He was during much of the 1990s to a quartet of James Carter and was on several of his albums involved (JC on the Set, Conversin 'With The Elders ) until his appointment in 1998 during a concert in Berlin, fell out with him on stage. Furthermore, he was with the band by Geri Allen on tour in Europe and is also on their CD Maroons (1992 ) to hear and belonged to the trio of Craig Taborn.

As a session musician, he worked on numerous recordings, including Karl Berger, Anthony Braxton, Steve Coleman / Greg Osby, Oliver Lake, Muhal Richard Abrams, Craig Taborn, Henry Threadgill, Richard Davis, in David Murray's Big Band and Octet, Cassandra Wilson, in Evan Parker's Transatlantic Art Ensemble and in 2002 in the band of Hugh Ragin.

In addition Tabbal worked in their own projects, first in the 1980s with Mitchell musicians in the formation Griot Galaxy ' by Faruq Z. Bey ( Opus Krampus on sound aspects ) and in a trio with A. Spencer Barefield and Tony Holland. (Live at nickel village, Sound Aspects ). Tabal also played in the percussion ensemble ' Pieces of Time ' with Andrew Cyrille, Famoudou Don Moye and Obo Addy. In 2001 he was diagnosed with a brain tumor.

Tabbal plays next to the drums as main instrument various percussion instruments from West Africa ( djembe and dunun ), North India ( tabla) and North Africa ( dumbek ).
