Tarik Shah

Tarik Shah ( born January 24, 1963 in Harlem as Tarik Dowdell ) is an American bassist of modern jazz, sitting since 2005 as a sympathizer of al -Qaeda in prison.

Life and work

Shah, who comes from a musical family (his brother Antoine Dowdell has worked as a music teacher and jazz pianist ), learned from the age of twelve double bass; he studied with Slam Stewart. With Betty Carter in 1985, he toured through Europe. Then he worked with Ahmad Jamal, Abbey Lincoln, Ron Burton and Art Taylor. Next he worked in the Duke Ellington Orchestra, and as a companion to Red Rodney, Roland Hanna, Harold Vick and Dr. Lonnie Smith and played regularly at clubs like St. Nick 's Pub in Manhattan. He also took with Vanessa Rubin ( Pastiche, 1993) and with the World Saxophone Quartet ( Breath of Life, 1992) on. He was arrested in 2005 because burdened him a V- Person of the FBI as a Jihad sympathizer. In 2007 he declared himself guilty to escape the maximum penalty, and was convicted.
