The State - Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi University - TSU (Georgian თბილისის ივანე ჯავახიშვილის სახელობის სახელმწიფო უნივერსიტეტი - თსუ / Tbilisi Ivane Dschawachischwilis Sachelobis Sachelmzipo Uniwersiteti - TSU) is the largest university in Georgia and the Caucasus. She has over 35,000 registered students and about 5,000 employees, the campus is spread over several locations in the urban area of the capital.

History

The University is a child of the Georgian independence movement. It was founded on 26 January 1918, private funds as Georgian University of Tbilisi. The first lectures were held in the rooms of the Georgian nobility school. The driving force behind the foundation was the historian Ivane Javakhishvili. The first rector was Petre Melikishvili. All lectures were first held in the Georgian language. This only ended with the inclusion of Georgia in the Soviet Union.

In 1989, the State University of Tbilisi Ivane Javakhishvili the additional name.

Structure

The TSU is divided into five faculties: Law, Economics and Business Administration, Humanities, Social and Political Sciences and Natural Sciences. 1994 a medical school was established, which has been independent since 2000. The university has 184 departments, 60 research laboratories and a research library with over 3.7 million books and periodicals.

The University has set up five branches in different cities of Georgia. It has seven museums (University history, Georgian emigration, mineralogy, geology and paleontology, geography, zoology and botany ). In 1923 she founded his own printing press, in 1933 its own publishing house. Since 1927, she is the weekly newspaper of Tbilisi Universiteti, since 1998 also the weekly Kartuli Universiteti out. Connected to the TSU is founded in 1999 Caucasus Business School (CBS).

The university has close cooperative links with universities and research institutions in the U.S., Germany, France, Great Britain, Russia, Ukraine, Turkey, Spain, Switzerland, Poland and Iran. In Germany, it is the universities in Saarbrücken, Bamberg, Jena and Göttingen. Together with the Friedrich -Schiller- University Jena, they are out since 1978, the scientific journal Georgica.

Acting President of the University is the lawyer Giorgi Chubua. He is director of the Georgian Academy of Sciences and was used on 7 April 2006 by the government after his predecessor Rusudan Lortkipanidse had criticized the Education Ministry planned layoffs.
