Tembleque, Spain

Tembleque is a Spanish town in the province of Toledo, in the Autonomous Community of Castile -La Mancha. The place is recognized as a National Treasure ( Bien de Interès Cultural ) in the category Conjunto histórico - artístico.

Location

Tembleque lies just 60 km ( driving distance ) southeast of Toledo, and about 95 kilometers south of Madrid. The lovely town of Orgaz is located approximately 38 km to the west.

Demographics

The highest population with 3,897 persons had Tembleque in 1930.

Economy

In earlier centuries Templeque was the artisan and mercantile center of a large number of individual farms and small villages in its agrarian hinterland. The mechanization of agriculture has led in the second half of the 20th century to a significant decline in the population.

History

The area around Tembleque divided into essential features of the history of Toledo: On the Romans came the Visigoths; which was followed in 711 by the Arabs and their allies Berber tribes, the territory after successful re-conquest ( reconquista ) in 1085 to the Christians under the leadership of the Castilian King Alfonso VI leonesisch. had to resign. Attractions

  • The main attraction of Tembleque is the large main square ( plaza mayor ) in the heart of the city with its balcony houses that give it the feel of an open-air theater.   • The small hermit church Ermita de Vera Cruz from the 18th century has an unusual octagonal plan. With the exception of precisely hewn cornerstones of its walls consist of rubble. The unadorned building is covered inside of a dome, which does not appear to the outside.
