The Asylum

The Asylum is an American film production and film distribution company, which was founded in 1997 by David Michael Latt, David Rimawi and Sherri Strain. The company is primarily known for turning low-budget films which copy the blockbuster of the major film studios. These films are also referred to as Mockbuster.

History

The Asylum was founded in 1997 by David Rimawi and Sherri Strain, two former Village Roadshow's staff, and the director David Michael Latt. The company focused on turning low-budget films, which were mostly located in the horror or action genre. 2005 produced The Asylum War of the Worlds 3 - How it all began, a low-budget version of HG Wells ' novel War of the Worlds. In the same year appeared a produced by Spielberg adaptation of the same substance. Blockbuster Inc. ordered 100,000 copies of the adaptation of The Asylum, which represented the largest order in the history of the company. This meant that Latt and Rimawi their business model covered and now produced on films which are based on the blockbuster of the major studios.

2008 20th Century Fox threatened with legal action against the film The Day the Earth Stood Still 2 - Attack of the robot because of its similarities to The Day the Earth Stood Still; Since then, however, no procedure was initiated by 20th Century Fox.

Beginning with the release of Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus from 2009, The Asylum produced films from the genre of animal horror. 2010 was built with 6 Guns currently the only Western.

2012 had The Asylum because of a complaint by the Universal Studios film American Battleship in American Warships to rename.

On October 5, 2012 Hold your Breath arrived in American cinemas and thus was The Asylum 's first feature film. In Germany the film was not running in the cinema, he was instead released on January 4, 2013 directly to DVD and Blu -ray.

For December 2012, the release of the film Age of the Hobbits was planned. This has been postponed indefinitely, because The Asylum by Warner Bros., Metro-Goldwyn- Mayer and Saul Zaentz of plagiarism of the Peter Jackson movie The Hobbit was sued. In Germany the film was titled Lord of the Elves published as scheduled on 20 December 2012.
