The Formalist

The formalist was an American literary magazine. The journal was founded in 1990 by the American Professor William Baer and published until 2004 every six months. It was dedicated poems in the style of the new formalism, ie the revival of form- conscious lyrics.

Among the poets who published their works in The Formalist, included, among others: Howard Nemerov, Richard Wilbur, Derek Walcott, Mona Van Duyn, Donald Justice, James Merrill, Maxine Kumin, Karl Shapiro, WS Merwin, May Swenson, WD Snodgrass, Louis Simpson, John Updike, Fred Chappell and John Hollander.

From 1994 to 2005 gave The formalist for poems in the form of a sonnet the Howard Nemerov Sonnet Award. Since 2005, the winner of the prize in the journal Measure will be announced.
