The God Thing is the second studio album by the German progressive metal band Vanden Plas. It appeared in 1997 on InsideOut Music.

Creation and publication

The album was recorded in 1997 in Schoeneck and Pirmasens and mixed by Robert Kohlmeyer. Guest musicians were involved P. Achim Schneider (cello) and Gunni Mahlig (violin). For the artwork photos of a sculpture by Marc Cesare Otto were used. After InsideOut Music in 1996 had already released the acoustic EP and cover AcCult, and The God Thing appeared in the Klever label. In France, the album was released with a French-language version of a title of the debut album Colour Temple, also a limited edition with bonus CD was produced for Fnac. InsideOut Music put the album in 2004 with an extended booklet and bonus tracks on re.

Reception

The album was well received by the press. Although Henning Mangold of the Baby Blue Pages perceives a disagreeable for him Dream Theater influence, however, raises the " play technical finesse " of the " leaden [n ] epic" out. Stefan glass from the Rock Hard praised the " blend of powerful guitars and mystical melodies " and concludes: " So less than an hour has passed, and no failure had to be registered. The panel presents itself as a unified whole. " The eclipsed magazine took The God Thing on to its list of prog metal milestones.
