The Guild of Thieves

The Guild of Thieves is a computer game from 1987, which was developed by the British company Magnetic Scrolls and published by Rainbird Software in the United Kingdom. It belongs to the genre of text adventures with graphics and is the successor of the game The Pawn.

Action

The action takes place in the fantasy world of the country Kerovnia. The player has to be the task of a member of the local Thieves Guild ( Guild of Thieves ). He must solve various puzzles and get more hidden valuables in to pass the entrance examination of the guild.

Gameplay

The control of the single-player adventure games on keyboard. Using a text parser are English words and sentences entered, for example, to examine rooms and travel directly from one action location to another ( "go-to -x "). The game instructions are included with some useful solution for the game objects.

Development and production details

The game has two-dimensional, the text description of the action places additional graphics. The Guild of Thieves has been implemented for the C 64, DOS, Atari 8- bit, Atari ST, Amiga, ZX Spectrum, Acorn Archimedes, Amstrad, Mac OS and Apple II. Was written the adventure of Robert Staggles. Programmer was Kenneth Gordon and the graphics came mainly from Tristan Humphries and Geoff Quilley.

Reception

In the 1980s, German games reviews highlighted the high-quality, photo-like graphics, logical puzzles and good text - parser. The adventure with 90 out of 100 rating points was evaluated. An American Game review praised the one hand, the quality of graphics and puzzles ( "the puzzles are Often delightful and the illustrations are absolutely eye- popping " ), criticized the other hand, the relatively low depth and action complexity ( "for an adventure, it's unusually thin" ).

In a study of computer game history and theory from 2006 was differentiated: In addition to the graphics, the British humor of the texts and the good riddles are to be welcomed; on the other side was the play of the action here but only a little ambitious ("The game is a thematically unambitious collect the treasures romp ").
