The Legacy (English: The legacy, the heritage ) is the debut album by the American thrash metal band Testament. It was released in April 1987 Megaforce Records. It was produced by Alex Perialas. The name of the album is the old name of the band, Legacy, back.
Genesis
After Steve Souza had left 1986 Testament to switch to Exodus, the band found in Chuck Billy of the hard rock band Guilt, the Souza himself had recommended the new singer and frontman. In early 1987, Jon took Zazula by Megaforce, the band under contract. Testament obtained with the album instant notoriety in the Bay Area thrash scene and beyond. Even before the publication of the plate has been reported in the trade press about the band. Especially Alex Skolnicks sophisticated soloing then created quite a stir. The subsequent tour with Anthrax, on the mini - LP Live at Dynamo was taken on June 8, 1987, helped to increase the level of awareness. The end of 1987 appeared this live album.
Guitarist Eric Peterson later said to the creation of The Legacy:

Reception
Holger Stratmann from Rock Hard magazine saw testament to the time of the release of The Legacy already reached the level of Metallica and praised Chuck Billy's vocals, he pointed towards the predecessor Steve Souza and compared him to James Hetfield's style. The production does not reveal parallels to Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning. He forgave 9.5 out of ten. Alex Henderson of allmusic saw next to Metallica and musical influences from Judas Priest. He also pointed out Alex Perialas ' production. The album was rated 4.5 out of five stars. On the website www.bloodchamber.de was particularly emphasized the higher melodiousness than comparable publications of Slayer or Exodus. With ten points, the highest score was awarded. In the book Best of Rock and Metal in the opinion of the German Rock Hard magazine best albums of the plate was ranked 51 of 500 albums discussed. Andreas Sky Stone called the production for that time " the measure of all things." Skolnicks guitar playing is still " beyond any doubt ".

At Over the Wall, a music video was shot, showing the band in an old building with ease. C.O.T.L.O.D. means Curse of the Legions of Death, translated " Curse of the Legions of Death". The written already then play The Legacy was not published until 1990 Souls of Black. Published in 2002 by Testament First Strike Still Deadly, a re-recording album on which some pieces of The Legacy were included. 2010 The Legacy was played on the U.S. tour with Megadeth and Exodus in its entirety.
