The Maytones

The Maytones, also known as The Mighty Maytones, is a Jamaican reggae singing duo, which was active between the late 1960s and 1980.

Band History

The Maytones were in the late 1960s, founded by Vernon Buckley and Gladstone Grant, who both lived in May Pen in Clarendon, which was also the inspiration for the name of the group.

After recording two Rocksteady pieces for Studio One, which remained unpublished, they took much of their earlier material for Alvin Ranglin, whereby they had " It Funny " local hit with " Loving Reggae" and and published in 1970 a version of Greyhound 's " Black and White".

They had more hits in Jamaica with love songs like " Preaching Love", "If Loving You Was Wrong " and " Brown Girl" before making a roots reggae style for songs like " Judas " Babylon A Fall "and" Run Babylon " assumptions.

They had great success with " Madness ", which was re-recorded for Ranglin, followed by an eponymous album.

The success of the Mighty Diamonds led the group and the producers Ranglin and Clement Bushay to market the duo as the Mighty Maytones.

There followed in 1978 the album Boat To Zion, which could not meet the expectations of success and was not perceived by the British record companies, who took many other Jamaican talents under contract.

To the film Rockers from 1979 controlled the Maytones at the track "Money Worries ".

As Buckley moved to Canada in 1980, the band broke up. A reunion took place in the 2000s.

Vernon brought out the solo album Raw, made recordings and performances with Bedouin Soundclash.
