The Street (film)

The Street is a Canadian animated short film by Caroline Leaf from the year 1976.

Action

A boy tells how his grandmother was dying. The physician Dr. Katzman attended the family and notes that the grandmother will die in the next few days. The boy, who has to visit his grandmother every day in her room and give her a kiss goodbye before he goes to school, sees her death with anticipation, was promised him her room as a future nursery. So far he has to share with his older sister a space.

The grandmother lives but even two years later. The womb sometime under the work load - household and care of the mother - together and must stay in bed for two weeks. At the time, the father decides that the grandmother to be brought into a Jewish old age home. The boy hopes now to be able to move into his new room, but when he asks his father in this regard, calls him the only a loudmouth. The mother has recovered and visited the grandmother in the nursing home. They sought, that it is immediately brought back into the family's apartment, what the father saw already come. One day, the boy sees on the street outside the apartment building, a crowd - the grandmother died and the family relationship and the rabbi have already arrived. In the evening, the boy's sister found that both are now probably sleep for the last time in a room, but the boy is no longer attracted by the idea of sleeping in the bed where his grandmother has died. Both children off the light. In the dark, the sister now mimics the spirit of the grandmother, who asks who is sleeping there in her bed.

Production

The Street is based on the eponymous short story by Mordecai Richler, who also wrote the screenplay of the film. The film was made in oil - on-glass animation.

Awards

The Street in 1977 for an Oscar in the category " Best Animated Short Film " nomination, but could not prevail against Leisure itself.

In 1976, Leaf was awarded the Grand Prize at the Ottawa International Animation Festival. She won the Genie Awards at the then -called genius Etrog for Best Animated Film, and also received the Wendy Michener Award.
