Theodor Lipps

Theodor Lipps ( born July 28, 1851 in Wallhalben, † October 17, 1914 in Munich) was a German philosopher and psychologist of the late 19th century. He was considered one of the main proponents of psychologism in Germany.

Life

Lipps received his doctorate in 1874 in Bonn. After a lectureship in Bonn ( 1877-90 ) and a professor in Breslau ( 1890-94 ), he was appointed professor at the University of Munich ( 1894-1914 ), where he became the successor of Carl Stumpf at the Department of Systematic Philosophy. One of his students was the philosopher and sociologist Max Scheler.

Lipps worked particularly in the field of psychological aesthetics.
