Theodor Storm

Hans Theodor Storm Woldsen ( born September 14, 1817 in Husum, † July 4, 1888 in Hanerau -Hademarschen ) was a German writer who was important as a poet and as a writer of short stories and prose of German realism with the north German style. In civilian job Storm was a lawyer.

Life and work

Childhood, youth and education (1817-1842)

Hans Theodor Woldsen Storm was the first child of the Judicial Council Johann Casimir Storm and his wife, the patrician daughter Lucie Woldsen in Husum, Markt 9, was born. 1818 the family moved into the house Neustadt 56, 1821 in the house of the grandparents Woldsen, Hohle Gasse 3 In the autumn of Storm came into the cliff school one, from 1826 to 1835 he attended the Husum Gelehrtenschule, then for three semesters the Katharineum in Lübeck.

Storm wrote as a 15- year-old student his first poems, which were modeled on the then-popular weekly poetry (first handed down poem: To Emma, 1833); at school he learned to imitate examples of ancient poetry and wrote his first prose. Four poems, and several journalistic works were printed in Husum weekly ( singer Evening Song, July 27, 1834) and in Dithmarsch and Eiderstedter messenger.

In Lübeck Storm Ferdinand Roese met, by whom he was familiar with the contemporary literature, including Goethe's Faust, Heine's Book of Songs and Eichendorff's poetry and prose.

In 1837 Storm studied law at the University of Kiel, where he was a member of the fraternity Albertina Kiel, and Berlin. Thus began his friendship with Theodor and Tycho Mommsen, with whom he carried a collection of Schleswig -Holstein songs, fairy tales and legends. In 1843 they jointly published the songbook of three friends that includes self-composed poems of the three authors. In September 1837 Storm became engaged to Emma cooling from the island of Foehr; in February 1838 sparked Emma cooling this engagement. Lawyer in Husum (1842-1853)

Despite the peace treaty of 1850 between Denmark and Prussia Storm took an unforgiving attitude towards Denmark. That's why it withdrew in 1852, the Danish minister Friedrich Ferdinand of Schleswig Tillisch the Bar.

Gerichtsassessor in Potsdam (1853-1856)

1853 spoke to him in Berlin an unpaid job in the District Court of Potsdam. At this time he published his novella written in 1849 Immensee. During his stay in Potsdam Storm tells of his disgust at the " Prussian human consumption in the state mechanism "; he struggled with professional and financial difficulties. Bailiff and magistrate in Husum (1864-1880)

After the defeat of Denmark in the German -Danish War of 1864 Storm was appointed in Husum from the population of the city to the bailiff. In March of that year he moved back to Husum.

Constanze Storm died on 24 May 1865 the birth of their daughter Gertrude. His sorrow gave Storm in the strophic poem cycle Deep shadows expression; In addition to the frequently read in school poems The city and Ans Lagoon is now flying the gull counts this cycle to the best known poems Storms.

1866 Storm married the 38 -year-old Dorothea Jensen, whom he had met shortly after his first marriage and with whom he had a passionate relationship. Retirement home in Hademarschen (1880-1888)

In May 1880 Storm took early retirement and moved to Hademarschen, where his younger brother John Storm ( 1824-1906 ) operated a timber trade. Theodor Storm had built a villa in the main street of the village. After his return, Storm began to work on the novella The Ghost Rider, which appeared in April 1888 as Storms last amendment. On July 4, 1888, he died of stomach cancer in Hademarschen. His final resting place he found in the cemetery " St. Jürgen " in Husum.

Aftereffect

Storm is one of the most important German representatives of the " civil " or " poetic realism ", where in addition to his poems, especially his short stories established his fame. Many of his works are still being launched. The novella The Ghost Rider is often used as reading in German classes. The book has been filmed several times.

Ten years after his death Storms created by Adolf Brütt memorial bust was unveiled in Husum Castle Park on his birthday. The town of Husum is today known as gray town by the sea, after the Storm Poem The City. In Husum and the rest of the Duchy of Schleswig play many stories Storms. Numerous public institutions throughout Germany, including squares, streets and the Theodor -Storm- School Husum, are named after him. The German Society for Sea Rescue named the Seenotkreuzer Theodor Storm after the writer.

The Theodor -Storm -Gesellschaft has approximately 1100 members, is dedicated to the exploration of his works and has its own scientific journal (the " writings of Theodor -Storm -Gesellschaft " ) out. Its current chairman is the literary scholar Heinrich Detering. It has its headquarters in Theodor Storm House in Husum water series.

The painter Angelika Dering Dering and Elizabeth are great-granddaughters of Storms.
