Thomas Berthold (2014)

Thomas Berthold ( born November 12, 1964 in Hanau ) is a former German football player. He began his professional career at Eintracht Frankfurt and played for five other first division team in Italy, Germany and Turkey. The defender completed beyond between 1985 and 1994 a total of 62 caps for the German national team and in 1990 won the World Cup.

Career

Clubs

Berthold learned at the local club KEWA Wachenbuchen playing football as a teenager, he moved to Eintracht Frankfurt and finally got to the 1982/83 season a license contract player in the pros. His league debut came on 12 March 1983 ( 24th Round ) in the 0-3 defeat in the away match against Hamburger SV, as he was substituted in the 71st minute for Martin Trieb. His first goal he scored on 4 June 1983 ( 34th Round ) in the 1:5 defeat in Dusseldorf with the score back to 1:3 half-time. After four more seasons for the Hesse Berthold moved to Italy. From 1987 to 1989 he first played in the first division side Hellas Verona, then for two seasons in the league rivals AS Roma, with whom he 1991 ( in the two final games against Sampdoria ) won the national club trophy and in the first leg on 30 May in Rome, at 3 :1- victory, a goal contributed.

Berthold 1991, he returned back to Germany. He first played for Bayern Munich, in 1993, he moved to VfB Stuttgart. In 1997, he won the DFB-Pokal with the Swabians. On 8 April 2000 ( 28th Round ), he played his last league game at the 2:5 home defeat against VfL Wolfsburg.

From 15 January 2001 to the end of season 2000/ 01 he played in Turkey for the first division Adanaspor. When the club the last (18th ) place in the table occupied and descent, Berthold ended his career as an active player.

National

On September 10, 1981 in Stolberg Berthold came in a 1-1 draw against the selection of France to his only international match for the U-18 national team.

Berthold played five times for the U- 21 team; for the first time on March 27, 1984 in Osnabrueck in the 1-1 draw against the Soviet Union, the last time on 11 March 1986 in Koblenz during the 0-0 draw against the national team of South Korea. On January 29, 1985 Berthold was appointed for the first time in the senior team. In the friendly against Hungary - the game was lost 0-1 - he came on in the 80th minute for Matthias Herget. His only goal in 62 international matches, he scored on 30 April 1985 at the World Cup qualifying match in a 5-1 away win against Czechoslovakia. Berthold participated in three World Cups and a European Championship and was at the 1990 World Cup in Italy world champion. The number of matches is relatively small when you consider that he was a regular for three World Cup finals and a total of 18 World Cup matches completed.

After the career

From 1 July 2003 to 14 March 2005, Thomas Berthold was a manager at Fortuna Dusseldorf. Currently, he is both a TV pundit in Liga total! worked as a businessman. In particular, he organizes and plans Fan Travel and arrangements, as on the occasion of the Football World Cup 2010 in South Africa. As part of the European Football Championship Women 2013 in Sweden as a commentator he presents some of the matches in the tournament.

Thomas Berthold presented in 1983 at the High State School in Hanau from the High School.

After disagreements with the coach Erich Ribbeck he was released in the 1992/93 season at Bayern Munich from training and received from Bavaria Treasurer Kurt Hegerich the ironic label " best paid German professional golfer after Bernhard Langer ."

On the football field he was known as a tough, but technically gifted defender.
