Thomas Cup

The Thomas Cup is the World Team Championship in badminton for men. The official name is "The International Badminton Championship Challenge Cup ". The Thomas Cup is one of the world's five tournaments of the 7 * category.

History

The tournament was after the first IBF President Sir George Alan Thomas, who has encouraged competition and donated the trophy named after. The trophy was donated in 1939, the first Thomas Cup was 1948/49, instead. To date, this event was won by the first host to always of nations from Asia.

The counterpart for the ladies is the Uber Cup. Since 1984, these two events are held in common.

Trophy

Was manufactured this three-piece Cup in London in 1939 by Atkin Bros of London. He is 71.12 inches tall and is including the handles, 40.64 cm wide. On the lid of the character of a player is attached. On the front of the cup is the following inscription: ". The International Badminton Championship Cup presented to the International Badminton Federation by Sir George Thomas, Bart, 1939 ". On the back of the bowl and on the base the names of the winning teams will be printed.

Mode

Until 1982 the Thomas Cup was held every three years. Since then, he is held every two years.

By 1984, nine games were played at the Thomas Cup ever encounter. Since 1984 only five games, namely three single and two double played. The order is the first single, double first, second single, double second and third singles.

First, there are regional qualifying tournaments. Since then, 12 teams reach the finals, the following classification shall apply: Asia provides four participants, three Europe, and Oceania, America and Africa one participant. The two remaining places will be automatically given to the defending champion and the host.

The final will be played as follows. The twelve teams are divided into four groups, in which everyone has to compete against each other. The group winners are then directly into the quarter-finals. The opponents of the group winners are determined from further encounters the group Second and third. Then it goes in the KO- semi-finals and finals. Until the year 1998, all games were played. Since 2000, the final will be played only in the knockout rounds until the winner is determined.
