Thomas Fahrner

Thomas Fahrner ( born July 2, 1963 in Ludwigshafen, Germany) is a former German swimmer.

He began his swimming career in France ( Lyon ASPTT ). The sports magazine L' Équipe called him " le plus Français des Allemands " ( " the most French of the Germans" ). From 1982 to 1984 he studied at the University of Lyon III Business Administration and Mathematics teacher, then Business Administration at the University of Southern California (BS, 1987) and Harvard University ( MBA, 1996).

Fahrner was as an individual swimmer 1983 German champion in the 400 m and 1500 m freestyle, as well as 1987 and 1988, over 100 m freestyle. He also won in the relay for the EOSC Offenbach of the German Championship 1985 on 4x200 m freestyle and 4x100 m medley. In 1986 and 1987 he was with the German EOSC team champion.

At the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, he was regarded as favorites for the Olympic gold medal in the 400m freestyle. Despite a victory in the run he failed in qualifying for a final place at nine hundredths of a second. In the B race he swam then Olympic record and thus faster than the American George DiCarlo at his Olympic victory. He is the only swimmer in Olympic history to win the same competition all runs and Olympic record aufstellte and yet was not Olympic champion. Fahrner was ninth in the final classification. In this Olympic competition Fahrner also achieved bronze 200m freestyle and silver in the 4 × 200 m relay.

At the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, he managed with the German relay 4 × 200 m bronze again and was also 8 200 m freestyle, 14 100 m freestyle and 4 about 4x100 m medley.

In the European Swimming Championships, he was four times European Champion in 1983, 1985 and 1987 on the 4x200 m freestyle in 1985 also has 4x100 m freestyle with the German team. In 1987 he was also third in the 400m freestyle and won the 4x100 m freestyle relay to second place.

At the World Championships 1986 in Madrid, he was third with the 4x200 m freestyle relay, finishing in fourth place in the 200m freestyle.

With the 4x200 m freestyle relay ( among others, along with Rainer Henkel and Michael Gross ) achieved Thomas Fahrner several world and European records.
