Thomas Gerull

Thomas Gerull ( born January 2, 1962 in Itzehoe ) is a former German fencer who for the Federal Republic of Germany won an Olympic silver medal in the épée team in 1988.

Career

In 1981, Gerull of Itzehoe to FC Tauberbischofsheim. In the World Fencing Championships 1985 in Barcelona Gerull belonged to the German team and won with Alexander Pusch, Achim Bellmann, Volker Fischer and Arnd Schmitt the world title. 1986 Sofia defended Pusch, Fischer, Schmitt and Elmar Borrmann the world title; Gerull was as a substitute here. In the World Fencing Championship in 1987, the German team was defeated by Pusch, Fischer, Schmitt, Borrmann and Gerull in the finals of the team from the Soviet Union.

Schmitt, Pusch and Gerull were at the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988, the three German single starter in the epee competition; while Schmitt Olympic champion, Gerull retired quite early and came in the final accounts the 23th Place. In the team competition Gerull won in the first round against Brazil in the quarter- final against South Korea and the 8:7 in the semifinal against Italy three battles. In the 8-3 final defeat by France Gerull won against Philippe Riboud and erfocht against Éric Srecki a draw. The German team Borrmann, Fischer, Gerull, Pusch and Schmitt received the silver medal.

In the 1989 World Fencing Championships in Denver, the German team entered a different line. Gerull as the reigning German champion sword and Elmar Borrmann were accompanied by Robert Felisiak, Stefan Hörger and Günter Jauch. The new team battled to the final before and it lost to the Italian fencers. A year later Gerull succeeded at the World Championships in Lyon, the greatest success of his career, against the Italians Angelo Mazzoni he won the singles title in the finals.
