Thomas J. Manton

Thomas J. Manton ( born November 3, 1932 in New York City; † July 22, 2006 ) was an American politician. Between 1985 and 1999 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Thomas Manton attended St. Joseph 's School in Astoria and the St. John's Preparatory School in Brooklyn. From 1951 to 1953 he served during the Korean War in the Marine Corps. From 1955 to 1960 he worked for the New York Police Department. Between 1960 and 1964 he worked as a sales representative for IBM. After studying law at St. John's Law School and was admitted as an attorney of his 1963 he began to practice in this profession. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Democratic Party launched a political career. Between 1970 and 1984 he was a member of the City Council of New York.

In the congressional elections of 1984, Manton was the ninth constituency of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Geraldine Ferraro on January 3, 1985. After six re- election he was able to complete in Congress until January 3, 1999 seven legislative sessions. Since 1993 he represented there as a successor to Gary Ackerman seventh district of his state. At times he was a member of the Energy Committee. Furthermore, headed a subcommittee. In 1998 he gave up another candidacy. He died on 22 July 2006 in New York of prostate cancer.
