Thoothukudi ( Tuttukkudi; Tamil: தூத்துக்குடி Tūttukkuṭi [TU ː t ː ː ɯk uɖi ] ), formerly anglicised Tuticorin, is a port city in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu with around 238,000 inhabitants ( 2011 census ). It lies on the Gulf of Mannar, about 100 kilometers northeast of Cape Comorin, the southernmost point of the Indian mainland and 530 kilometers southwest of Chennai. It is the capital of the district of the same name.

Thoothukudi was a major port city in ancient times. In modern times it was an important stronghold of European colonial powers dar. newly founded by the Portuguese around the middle of the 16th century, Thoothukudi was in 1658 in the Netherlands and 1825 in British possession over.
