Through the Past, Darkly (Big Hits Vol 2), for'' Big Hits ( High Tide and Green Grass) '', the second official compilation published in England by the Rolling Stones, released on September 12, 1969, shortly after the death of Brian Jones on July 3, 1969, shortly before the start of their three-week U.S. Tounee on November 7, 1969 which was completed on 30 November. This was also their live album Get Yer Ya -Ya 's Out! . The next studio album, Let It Bleed, was released during this year's tour on November 29 in the U.S. and on December 5 in Europe. A day later, the Stones played at Altamont Free Concert yet, during her appearance came in a knife right in front of the stage a spectator killed. Your last tour of the U.S. at this time was already over three years back.

Once more in a publication of the Rolling Stones is different from the American version of the British. The British version also contains older, published before 1966 songs, otherwise both editions include publications that were previously only available as singles, such as Jumpin 'Jack Flash Let's Spend the Night or Together. The songs included here are recorded in the period from August 1963 to June 1969.

The compilation was both in England and the USA with # 2 on the album charts as well as in Germany ( 13th) a great commercial success for the band. Already on July 4, 1969, the single Honky Tonk Women was previously published, a number - one hit in the UK and the USA. In Germany, the extraction reached # 2 on the singles chart.

On the inside of both album covers to find the following, dedicated to Brian Jones words: "When this you see, remember me, and bear me in your mind Let all the world say whatthey may, speak of me as you find". These lines can be read also in the booklet as the Super Audio Compact Disc (SACD ) newly released in August 2002 U.S. version of Through the Past, Darkly (Big Hits Vol 2 ), the English version of the album is currently not commercially available.

When publishing a LP was released with a folding octagonal cover limited edition, now a coveted collector's item.

The album title is allegedly inspired by the English translation of the New Testament, it says here in the first Epistle to the Corinthians in chapter 13:12: "For now we see through a glass, darkly " ( " For now we see through a mirror in a dark word "). More likely is the assumption that the album title on the film Through a Glass Darkly: refers (English title Through a Glass Darkly ) by Swedish director Ingmar Bergman in the year 1961.
