Tillabéri Region

The Tilabéri region is one of the seven regions of Niger and is located in the southwest of the country. Its capital is Tilabéri. The region has 2,715,186 inhabitants ( 2012).

Geography

Tilabéri lies in the Sahel. The Niger River flows through the region. In the northwest are the temporary water-bearing rivers Béli, Gorouol and Sirba, in the south the rivers Mekrou and Tapoa. In its geological structure of the region is attributable to the geological era in the east and in the west the Tertiary era Precambrian.

Surrounded by Tilabéri is the capital Niamey, which forms a separate district. In the north the region borders to the neighboring state of Mali, to the east by Niger's Tahoua region and to the southeast by Niger's Dosso region. To the southeast is located in small border section to the neighboring state of Benin. In the West Tilabéri borders the neighboring country Burkina Faso.

In the extreme south of the region of the National Park lies W.

History

The Tilabéri region dates back as an administrative unit in 1964 created the department of Niamey. In 1988, the city Niamey was released from the Department, which received the name Tilabéri now after his new capital. 1998 Tilabéri was converted as all previous Nigerien departments in a region. At the same time emerged from the former arrondissements departments, which is why there is still a department called Tilabéri, but the former district Tilabéri corresponds to and represents an administrative level below the present region.

Population

The majority of the population in the region are the Zarma and Songhai with 64%. Other ethnic groups in Tilabéri are Fulani 13%, with 10% Tuareg, Hausa with 10% and Gourmantché with 2% of the total population.

Economy and infrastructure

In the region Tilabéri there are 2513 primary schools, of which 13 are private schools. The gross enrollment rate was in the school year 2009/2010 68.9 % ( nationwide 72.9 % ) in girls 64.3 % ( nationwide 63.9 %). At a primary school teacher average of 37 students ( 39 nationwide ) came. The primary school completion rate was 39.7 % ( nationwide 49.3 % ) in girls 36.5 % ( nationwide 41.5 %).

Subdivision

The Tilabéri region is divided into 13 departments Abala, Filingue, Ayérou, Balleyara, Banibangou, Bankilaré, Gothèye, Kollo, Ouallam, Say, Téra, Tilabéri and Torodi.
