Tom Ewell

Tom Ewell, actually Samuel Yewell Tompkins ( born April 29, 1909 in Owensboro, Kentucky, † September 12, 1994 in Woodland Hills, California ) was an American actor.

Ewell began acting as a student in his summer camp in 1928 together with his friend Don Ameche. In 1931 he went to New York and received acting lessons in a class with Montgomery Clift and Karl Malden. In 1934 he debuted on Broadway in 1940, he debuted in the film. He played in the early years especially comedic supporting roles. He received greater attention in 1949 by the film comedy Adam's Rib with Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn as lawyers couple. He played his most famous role with the male lead role in the comedy The cursed 7th year. He played his first role in 1952 in the Broadway production on the stage and was awarded the Tony Award. 1955 Billy Wilder cast him in his adaptation to the side of Marilyn Monroe. For his performance in the film, he was awarded a Golden Globe Award. This was the highlight of his acting career. He played in the following years, especially in television productions and ended his career in 1986.

Tom Ewell was married twice. A first time from 1946 to 1947. He married in 1948 Marjorie Sanborn. Together they had a child and was until his death in 1994, a married couple.
