Tom Gries

Tom Gries ( born December 20, 1922 in Chicago, Illinois as Steven Thomas Gries, † January 3, 1977 in Pacific Palisades, California ) was an American film director and screenwriter.

Life

Gries studied at Georgetown University. During World War II he served in the U.S. Marines and worked after his retirement as a reporter for a newspaper in Chicago. His career in the film business he started in 1952 as an associate producer. He has also written screenplays and gave his debut in 1954 with the film Serpent Iceland. Especially in the 1960s, he directed numerous episodes of various television series, including for tennis, I Spy. Increasingly he turned and television productions, including films such as Helter Skelter in 1976, but also some movies.

Throughout his life turned Gries with various movie stars, including Donald Sutherland, Charles Bronson and Charlton Heston and twice Bruce Dern.

1964 and 1972, he was awarded the Emmy.

Tom Gries was married three times. His first wife from 1958 to 1960 was the actress Marla English. From this relationship comes a child. The following three years he was married to Alice King, this marriage remained childless. 1969 married Gries turn an actress. The marriage with Yvonne Gilbert held six years and together they had a child.

His last film he could not complete due to a fatal heart attack, Monte Hellman presented the project I am the greatest Muhammad Ali over 1977 ready.

Gries ' son Jon Gries has worked as an actor.
