Tommy Sandlin

Tommy Sandlin ( born March 31, 1944 in Hemlingby to Gävle, † December 27, 2006 ) was a Swedish professional ice hockey player and coach, who has been called " Hockey Professor ".

Career

Tommy Sandlin played at Gavle GIK Hockey and began early to train youth teams. He was head coach of his home club, who played at this time in the second-class Division 2 in 1968. A year later he moved to local rivals Brynäs IF, which he led until 1977 to five Swedish championships. In 1977 he moved within the Elitserien to MODO Hockey with which he was in 1979 again the Swedish championship.

In parallel, he trained between 1978 and 1980 the Swedish national ice hockey team, with whom he won the bronze medal at the Ice Hockey World Championship in 1979 and the Olympic bronze medal in 1980. After these successes he coached until 1983 MODO Hockey, marriage has been committed by the IF Björklöven. In 1986 he was again coach and led the national team at the World Ice Hockey Championship 1987 first gold medal in 25 years. He remained until 1990, head coach of the Tre Kronors and won with them the Olympic bronze medal in 1988 and the silver medal at the Ice Hockey World Championship in 1990.

In the 1990/91 season he coached again the IF Björklöven in Division I, rather returned to Brynäs IF. In 1993 he won the club championship in 1995 and reached again the playoff finals. In the 1996/97 season, he supervised the junior team of the Association, who participated in the SuperElit.

Between 1998 and 2000 he was head coach when Mora IK with which he managed to climb out of Division I in the HockeyAllsvenskan. In the summer of 2001, he was obliged from Leksand IF as head coach, but was released following the mid- season and replaced by Jarmo Tolvanen. Sandlin Then moved to AIK Solna from the Elitserien, where he replaced Kari Jalonen.

Between 2002 and 2004 he coached the Tierp HK from Division I, before in 2004 he was head coach of Trondheim Black Panthers was in the summer. In December 2006 he resigned for health reasons from his post after he had suffered a heart attack. On the consequences of the infarction Sandlin died on 27 December 2006 at his home. He left behind his wife, three adult children and four grandchildren.
