Thomas Jefferson " Tommy" Smith (born 31 March 1990 in Macclesfield ) is an English- New Zealand soccer player. The defender stands since 2007 in Ipswich Town under contract and internationally represents the New Zealand national team.

Club career

Born in the English Macclesfield defender played in childhood for Crewe Alexandra, but moved with his family to New Zealand in 1998 and went through there too junior programs. In 2004, he received an invitation from Ipswich Town for several weeks of trial and was eventually incorporated into the youth academy. In 2007 he received his first pro contract and was loaned out in February 2008 in the Conference National at Stevenage Borough. After 15 league operations until season's end, he returned to Ipswich, and made his debut in the Football League Championship under coach Jim Magilton in the 1-2 defeat to the season opener of the 2008/09 season against Preston North End. In the fall of 2008, he broke his ankle in training and fell for seven months from. Only on the final day of the season he was in a 2-1 win against Coventry City under new manager Roy Keane his comeback.

Under Keane, he also belonged to the start of the following season to the permanent staff, before settling in a training session in October 2009, two dislocated fingers and had to pause. Following his re- found the recovery on the left-back and center-back position deployable Smith no longer considering and was eventually awarded the beginning of 2010 to the third division side FC Brentford to get match practice.

National

In September 2007, John Peacock Smith called in the English World Cup squad for the U- 17 World Cup in South Korea. After a weak performance in the opening game against North Korea but was not used in the further course of the tournament.

After the successful qualification of the New Zealand National Team for the World Cup 2010 Smith accepted the offer of coach Ricki Herbert, who assured the defensive talent in the event of a dressing change a place in the 23-man World Cup squad. Smith has been nominated in the wake of Herbert for the first World Cup warm-up match on March 3, against Mexico and was in the 0-2 defeat in the grid.
