Tõnu Õim

Tõnu OIM (born 16 June 1941 in Tallinn) is an Estonian chess grandmaster, and both the 9th and the 14th Correspondence Chess World Champion.

Life

OIM studied sports in Moscow, with completion in 1975 and worked as a head coach in the chess section of the Committee for Sports in Tallinn.

OTB

OIM successfully played OTB chess before his correspondence chess career. In 1959 he became Junior Champion of Estonia. In 1967, he took 2nd place in the Men's Championship of Estonia. In the same year he took part in the 35th USSR championship, beating among others former world champion Mikhail Tal and Lew Polugajewski.

Correspondence Chess

Since 1963 he has devoted to the correspondence chess when he was employed in countries fighting for Estonia. Later he took part in the 7th Chess Olympiad and the European Team Championships. In 1975 he became an International Master in 1981 he received the title of Correspondence Chess Grand Master, at the 9th Correspondence Chess Championship ( held from 1977 to 1982 ), he became world champion (13 out of 16 points ), at the 12th World Cup, he was ranked 6th in 1991 he won Axelsson the Memorial. He also won the 14th World Championship, held from 1994 to 1999, and was the first player to win the world title twice in correspondence chess.
