Toots Hibbert

Frederick " Toots " Hibbert (actually Frederick Nathaniel Hibbert, born December 10, 1945 in May Pen, Parish of Clarendon, Jamaica ) is a ska and roots reggae singer and bandleader Toots and the Maytals.

Life

Hibbert grew up as the youngest of seven brothers and sisters and received his musical education by singing gospel music in a church choir. As a teenager, he left his hometown and moved to the capital Kingston.

There he met Raleigh Gordon and Jerry Matthias and formed with them the Maytals. The group was in the 60's one of the most popular vocal ensembles Jamaica and worked with famous producers such as Coxsone Dodd, Prince Buster, Byron Lee and Leslie Kong.

Hibbert was one of the first artists who used the word " reggae ". His single from 1968 Do The Reggay, an early reggae song, is considered the first mention of the word on record.

Hibbert also played the seminal Jamaican film The Harder They Come (1972 ) with.

Even today makes Toots and his band regularly tours around the world.

Awards

  • In 2004, he won a Grammy for Best Reggae Album.
  • In 2012 he was awarded for his outstanding contribution to the development of Jamaican popular music with the Order of Jamaica, the fourth highest order of the country.
