Torbjörn Kornbakk

Torbjörn Jarle Kornbakk ( born May 28, 1965 in Gothenburg ) is a former Swedish wrestler.

Career

Torbjörn Kornbakk grew up in Gothenburg. As a teenager, he played football and swam like, but came in 1973 along with his brother Martin by a friend to wrestle. He joined the sports club Örgryte IS Gothenburg and was already in the youth and junior age one of the best Swedish wrestler of his respective age group. He wrestled exclusively in the Greco- Roman style. At a size of 1.79 m, it weighed about 76 to 78 kg, and was more of a slender, elegant Ringer Type. With the help of his coach Martin Steen he made the leap with 20 years in the Swedish national team. His debut at international championships he gave at the European Championships in 1988 in Kolbotn / Norway. He took a good 5th place and was the best wrestler of a non- socialist state. At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul Torbjörn still got no use. The more experienced Roger Tallroth was preferred to him.

But in 1989 he was at the European Championships in Oulu back again and took from then on Sweden in many international championships until 1998. Oulu, he took an excellent second place. In the final he defeated Petar Tenew from Bulgaria. At the World Championships the same year in Martigny / Switzerland he had were satisfied with a 9th place.

The first international title won Torbjörn 1990. Established in Poznań, he was European champion. In an all- Scandinavian final he defeated while the Finns Tuomo Karila. At the World Championships in Rome in 1990 he delivered, although again some good fights, but ultimately ended up in 6th place

Also in de European Championship of 1991 in Aschaffenburg, he won a medal again, while he went out at the World Championships the same year, empty the 10th Place.

In the Olympic year 1992, he made in Barcelona in his first participation in the Olympic Games winning a medal. In the battle for the bronze medal he won over Nestor Almanza of Cuba, after he had failed at the Pole Joseph Tracz in the semifinals.

In 1993, he was injured only participate in the taking place in Stockholm in the autumn of world championships. He would have of course won in his home country a medal, but because of a defeat against Frenchman Yvon Riemer in the fight for the bronze medal he was only on the 4th Place.

For this he was in 1994 again very successful, because he won both at the European Championships in Athens and at the World Championships in Tampere the bronze medal. At the World Championships he defeated his old rival Mnazakan Iskandarjan from Russia just after points and defeated in the battle for the bronze medal Stoyanow Stoyan from Bulgaria.

After Torbjörn failed due to an injury in 1995, he was from 1996 to 1998 back on the mat. But He came only at the European Championships 1997 in Kouvola on a top spot. He was in fact the second time European champions. In the final battle he beat the Finns Marko Asell. In the 1996 Olympics he was previously landed on the 10th Place disappointing for him.

After he had died in the 1998 World Cup in their own country, namely in Gävle, after two defeats against the Armenians Levan Geghamyan and the Japanese Takamitsu Katayama only to 22nd position, he ended his international career.

Torbjörn Kornbakk was very well known in Germany, because he struggled successfully for many years for the KSV Witten in the Bundesliga wrestler. He now works as Chiroprakatiker in his hometown.
