Meadow salsify ( Tragopogon pratensis)

Bock Beards ( Tragopogon ) are a genus of flowering plants in the subfamily Cichorioideae within the sunflower family ( Asteraceae). They colonize areas across Eurasia and North Africa. Some species worldwide are encountered invasive plants.

Description

The Tragopogon species are biannual to perennial herbaceous plants (up to 15) reached the heights of growth from 50 to 150 cm. The stems are often branched. The seated leaves are entire.

The bloom conditions are individually at the ends of branches. The flower heads contain from 30 to 50 to 180 (or more) of ray florets. The fruits are dark to light brown achenes with a large, white to brownish hair ring or Pappus as a flight parachute.

System

The genus Tragopogon was erected in 1753 by Carl Linnaeus in Species Plantarum, 2, p 789. As Lecttypusart Tragopogon L. porrifolius has been set. The genus Tragopogon belongs to subtribe Scorzonerinae from the tribe Cichorieae in the subfamily Cichorioideae within the family Asteraceae (Asteraceae).
