Tréguier

Tréguier ( Breton Landreger ) is a commune with 2630 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Côtes- d'Armor in the Brittany region; it belongs to the district of the canton of Lannion and Tréguier. Tréguier is the historical capital of Trégor. The place is located on the estuary of the river Jaudy, at the confluence of its tributary Guindy.

History

" Val Trécor " was first mentioned in 535 with the Gallic monk Tugdual of Tréguier, who founded a monastery here. Since then Tréguier has become an obligatory stop the Tro - Breizh, the pilgrimage to the seven founder saints of Brittany.

Tugdual was consecrated in 542 as Bishop of Tréguier. It seems that soon developed an important settlement to his monastery. In the year 848 Nominoë, prince of the Brittany made ​​, from the monastery diocese a regular diocese. A little later Tréguier was destroyed by the Normans and abandoned by the population.

During the French Revolution the diocese Tréguier was dissolved. The cathedral was rededicated to the stables. After the loss of the status of diocesan seat, it went downhill with Tréguier. Before the revolution, the city had more inhabitants than Saint- Brieuc, which is 18 times larger today.
